Just under 10,000 people filed into Harry Grove Stadium on Saturday to watch Dylan Bundy pitch. They, like opposing hitters, left the ballpark shaking their heads.

The Orioles' No. 2 prospect struck out six and allowed two runs on six hits over five innings to win his Carolina League debut as Frederick beat Salem, 5-3.

After yielding only two unearned runs over 30 innings in the Class A South Atlantic League, Bundy blanked the Red Sox until Travis Shaw hit a two-run homer in the fourth. The fourth overall pick in last year's Draft threw 53 of 78 pitches for strikes and did not walk a batter while facing four over the minimum. Shaw's blast was Salem's lone extra-base hit against him.

"I think it was a 1-1 pitch and it was a fastball trying to go in on Shaw and I left it in the middle of the plate and he took advantage of it," Bundy said. "That's what's going to happen here. They have better hitters up here."

MLB.com's No. 8 overall prospect has been nothing short of masterful in his first pro season. SAL opponents batted .053 against him, and he struck out 40 in eight starts with Delmarva. Moving up a level will be the first real test for the 19-year-old right-hander, who threw predominately fastballs with the Shorebirds.

"Last outing, I think I threw three off-speed pitches," Bundy said. "The organization wanted me to throw my curve and changeup a little bit more and I felt like I did a good job of doing that 0-2 or 1-2 and getting some strikeouts on them.

"The past eight starts, I didn't throw them more than three times a game. Today. I think I threw more than 10 and more than half for strikes, quality strikes for swings and misses."

Bundy also expressed a little relief after his ERA finally moved off 0.00.

"Giving up the first one or two runs in pro ball is going to happen to everybody and now I can focus on pitching my game," he said after equaling the longest outing of his brief career.

"I felt great. I had all my pitches working tonight. I had pretty good command for the most part."

Shaw's second homer of the season had given the Red Sox a 2-1 lead, but Kipp Schutz led off the bottom of the fourth with his first longball and Trent Mummey delivered a two-run double to put Bundy in position to win.

The Oklahoma high school product gave up a one-out single in the fifth to Matty Johnson, who was quickly erased on a double play by Red Sox No. 18 prospect Jackie Bradley.

As he left the mound, Bundy received a standing ovation from the Keys' largest crowd in more than six years.

"It was nice," he said. "Huge crowd tonight and everybody was cheering me on. This was great."

Beginning a rehab stint with Salem, Ryan Kalish homered and scored twice.
